10 Essential Tips for Visiting St. Lucia

St. Lucia is an island paradise brimming with natural beauty, rich culture, and unique experiences.

From its iconic Pitons to yummy local cuisine, there’s so much to discover here!

To help you make the most of your visit, here’s my list of St. Lucia tips—giving you everything you need to know to plan your trip.

1. Best Time to Visit

The weather in St. Lucia is tropical year-round, but timing your visit can make a big difference:

  • December to April: The dry season offers the best weather but comes with higher prices and crowds.
  • July to November: Hurricane season brings humidity and a chance of storms but also fewer tourists and lower costs.
  • May and June: The sweet spot! Shoulder season means great weather, smaller crowds, and more affordable accommodations.

We were here in mid-June and had great weather. It got rainy for a night or two and a couple of days with some clouds, but that’s it.

Keep in mind that even during the rainy season, showers are often short-lived and followed by sunshine.

2. Getting Around the Island

Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore St. Lucia at your own pace. Keep these tips in mind:

  • St. Lucians drive on the left side of the road.
  • Roads are steep, narrow, and often lack shoulders, so confidence behind the wheel is key. Luckily, I have Garett, who doesn’t mind driving!
  • A 4-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended for handling uneven terrain. Some things to do in St. Lucia are off on dirt roads.

If driving isn’t your thing, you can just simply take a tour!

For those who prefer not to drive, booking a guided tour is a hassle-free way to see the island’s highlights.

Many tours combine snorkeling, visits to the Sulphur Springs, and boat rides for a fun and efficient day out.

3. Currency and Tipping

  • The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC), but USD is widely accepted. Many vendors and smaller shops prefer cash, so carry a mix of both currencies. Clarify if the price is in EC or USD before buying.
  • Credit and debit cards are accepted in larger establishments but don’t rely on them exclusively.
  • Tipping: A 10-15% gratuity is often included in restaurant bills, but adding a little extra for exceptional service is always appreciated. Don’t forget to tip tour guides, porters, and taxi drivers!

4. Packing Tips

Here’s what to pack to stay comfortable and prepared:

  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Protect both your skin and the island’s delicate coral reefs.
  • Bug Spray: Mosquitoes can be fierce, especially at night.
  • Waterproof Dry Bag: Essential for protecting your belongings during beach days or boat tours. I never leave home without mine.
  • Sturdy Shoes: Lightweight hiking boots or sneakers are great for exploring the Pitons or nature trails.
  • Snorkel Gear: If you plan to snorkel outside of tours, bringing your own set gives you the freedom to dive in anytime.
  • Adaptor: St. Lucia uses 240V outlets with British-style plugs.

You should bring a mix of laid-back beach wear with decent cover-ups and some nice clothing to attend your resort dinners.

Make sure you bring something other than flip-flops, as those are usually not permitted at nicer resort restaurants.

  • Beach Safety: Be mindful of sharp coral, sea urchins, and strong currents when snorkeling or swimming.
  • General Safety: St. Lucia is relatively safe, but avoid secluded areas at night and keep valuables secure.

6. Internet and Connectivity

  • Don’t dress inappropriately. It’s a relatively conservative island. You can get away with more at your resort, but take care when wandering outside resort grounds.
  • Don’t walk anywhere late at night, and generally speaking, try not to go anywhere solo, particularly at night.
  • Don’t carry a crazy amount of cash anywhere. Check here for info on accessing money when you’re abroad.
