What to Expect at the Mud Baths

The mud baths are the highlight of the Sulphur Springs experience. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Mud Buckets for Lathering: There are two buckets with two types of volcanic mud: gray and black.
    • The gray mud is exfoliating, with small bits of rock that gently scrub the skin.
    • The black mud is smoother, best for lathering your body for a soft, silky finish.

  • Thermal Pools: There are several pools of varying temperatures for soaking.
    • The highest pool is the hottest, perfect for those who enjoy a steamy soak.
    • Lower pools cool slightly, offering a more comfortable dip as you move downstream.

Cover yourself in mud, let it dry, then rinse off and soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters!

  • Wear Dark Swimsuits: The mud can stain, so avoid light-colored swimwear.
  • Bring a Towel: Towels and extra clothes should be packed!
  • Protect Your Belongings: Keep valuables safe in a waterproof bag or leave them behind to avoid mud damage.
  • Sensitive Skin: Test the mud on a small area if you have sensitive skin, as the minerals can be potent.
  • Timing: Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds, especially if cruise ships are in port.
  • Weather: The springs are open year-round, and any time is a good time, but keep in mind that July – September is some of the hotter months, and taking a dip in warm water may not sound as attractive.
