How to Get Around the Algarve, Portugal: Car, Bus, Taxi?!

The Algarve stretches over 150km of coastline, and while everything is relatively close, “relatively close” means nothing if you’re stuck without transport.

The good news: there are several ways to get around, and the right one depends on your travel style, budget, and how much you want to explore. Here’s the honest breakdown.

How to Get Around The Algarve: Quick Lowdown

Renting a Car in the Algarve

Let’s just get this out of the way: renting a car is the best way to get around the Algarve.

The coastal trails, hidden beaches, surf spots, and scenic detours that make this region special are almost impossible to reach any other way. If you’re planning to see more than one town, a car changes everything.

The most convenient pickup is Faro Airport. Land, grab your keys, and go. Most major towns like Lagos, Albufeira, and Portimão also have rental offices if you’re arriving by train or bus.

A Few Things to Know Before You Book

  • Most rentals in Europe are manual. If you need an automatic, request it early — they’re less common, more expensive, and get snapped up fast in peak season.
  • Age restrictions apply. Most companies require drivers to be at least 21, and under-25s often pay a surcharge. Check the fine print before booking.
  • Prices swing a lot by season. Off-season (Oct–Apr) you’ll find solid deals; peak summer (Jun–Aug) prices spike. Book as far in advance as possible.
  • Get the toll pass. Portugal’s toll roads are electronic — without one, you’ll need cash or risk fines. Worth the small daily fee.
  • Check your insurance first. Rental desks are great at upselling coverage. Your travel insurance or credit card may already cover it — check before you pay for theirs.
  • Document the car before you drive off. Photo and video every scratch and scuff. Takes five minutes and saves a lot of grief later. This honestly goes for renting cars anywhere in the world btw!

Driving in the Algarve

Driving here is pretty relaxed. Roads are well-maintained, signage is clear, and traffic outside peak summer is rarely an issue. Two main routes to know:

Architecture building Portugal
  • The EN125 — the old coastal road through towns and villages. Slower, scenic, and free.
  • The A22 (Via do Infante) — the toll highway running the length of the Algarve. Fast and efficient; use it when covering distance matters.

Speed limits: 50km/h in towns, 90km/h on regular roads, 120km/h on motorways. And avoid driving in Lisbon if you can, it’s a completely different beast.

Using Buses to Get Around the Algarve

Buses are the most realistic car-free option — and they work well for town-to-town travel. There are a few sightseeing buses in the bigger towns, but if you’re taking a bus from town to town, you can check here.

The main operator is EVA Transportes, with affordable routes connecting Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos, Tavira, and Sagres. The limitation: buses won’t get you to coastal trails, remote beaches, or surf spots.

If you’re happy to base in one town and supplement with tours, buses can work fine. If you want to roam freely, you’ll feel the constraint fast.

Search and book bus routes here.

Taxis, Uber & Bolt

Taxis work well for short, specific trips, airport to hotel, hotel to beach, but get expensive fast if you’re relying on them all trip. In remote areas, you’ll need to call one to collect you too.

Uber and Bolt operate in larger towns like Faro and Albufeira, but coverage is patchy and wait times can be long. Download both apps as a backup, but don’t count on rideshares as your primary transport.

Tuk-Tuks & Tours

Tuk-tuks are fun for exploring within a specific town, Albufeira especially has them, but they’re not a way to actually get around the Algarve. Think of them as an activity, not a transport solution.

Tours, on the other hand, are genuinely underrated for car-free visitors. Many of the Algarve’s best experiences — Benagil Cave, Ponta da Piedade, dolphin watching, jeep safaris, kayaking the coast — are tour-based anyway.

For day trips to specific highlights, tours can actually cost less than the cumulative taxi bill. A mix of buses for inter-town travel and tours for the good stuff is a completely workable strategy if you’re going car-free.

Getting to the Algarve: Faro or Lisbon?

  • Flying into Faro is the easiest entry point. Pick up your rental right at the airport and you’re in the Algarve immediately. Buses and taxis are also available from arrivals into Faro town.
  • Flying into Lisbon can work out cheaper, especially for international flights. From there, rent a car and drive south (3–4 hours), or take a long-distance bus or train. If you’re doing a one-way trip, fly into Lisbon, drive the Algarve, fly home from Faro, just check whether the one-way drop-off fee makes it worth it.

Can you get around the Algarve without a car?

Yes, but with limitations. Buses connect the main towns, and tours fill in the gaps for specific attractions. Base yourself in one town and work outward via tours and occasional taxis, and it’s doable.

If you want to explore freely, remote beaches, coastal trails, surf spots, a car makes everything significantly easier.

Is Uber available in the Algarve?

Uber and Bolt operate in larger towns like Faro and Albufeira, but coverage is patchy and wait times can be long. Treat them as a useful backup, not your main plan.

Trail of Headlands one of the things to do in Carvoeiro

How long does it take to drive across the Algarve?

Faro to Sagres is about 1.5 hours on the A22. On the slower EN125 coastal road, add another 30–45 minutes. Most destinations are well within reach of each other on any given day.

Is it easy to drive in the Algarve?

Yes, roads are well-maintained, traffic is manageable outside peak summer, and signage is clear. The only place to be cautious is Lisbon. Once you’re in the Algarve, it’s relaxed driving.

Do I need an International Driving Permit for Portugal?

EU license holders don’t need one. US, Canadian, UK, and Australian license holders can drive on their regular license for short stays, but always double-check current requirements before you travel as rules can change.

What is the best way to get from Faro Airport to Algarve towns?

If you’re renting a car, pick it up right at the airport. If not, there’s a bus into Faro town with onward connections, or taxis for direct transfers to your accommodation.

Where to stay in the Algarve

How much does a rental car cost in the Algarve?

It varies a lot by season — off-season deals can be very reasonable, while July and August prices spike. Book as far in advance as possible and always compare across platforms. I use this to find deals.

Are there buses from Lisbon to the Algarve?

Yes — Rede Expressos runs regular coaches from Lisbon to Faro, Lagos, Albufeira, and other towns. Journey time is around 3.5–4 hours. Check routes and book here.

Don’t forget travel insurance before any trip! I use Safety Wing — also worth checking World Nomads.
