1. Pacaya Volcano Day Trip
Pacaya Volcano is one of the most popular day trips from Antigua and a great introduction to volcano hiking.

The hike takes around two hours and winds through forest, volcanic ash, and rocky terrain, with steaming vents and warm ground along the way. You can’t reach the true summit, but the experience still feels very real.
Lava is not guaranteed. I didn’t see flowing lava during my visit and it was still 100% worth it. You do get to roast marshmallows using heat from volcanic rock, which is exactly as fun as it sounds.

Pacaya is about 1–1.25 hours from Antigua and works well as a half-day trip. I did this tour the day after landing and met people right away, which led to plans for the rest of my stay.

2. Lake Atitlán Day Trip
Lake Atitlán is one of Guatemala’s most famous destinations, surrounded by volcanoes and colorful lakeside towns. Many tours from Antigua offer a long day trip that includes transport, viewpoints, and time in one or two villages.

You’ll get big scenery, lake views, and a taste of the region’s vibe. That said, almost everyone who does this as a day trip immediately wishes they had planned more time.
If you’re short on days, a day trip gives you a preview. If you can spare the time, staying a few nights at the lake is far better. DON’T do a day trip if you can avoid it because it’s worth a lot longer. Truly!

3. Chichicastenango Market
Chichicastenango hosts one of the largest and most famous markets in Central America, held on Thursdays and Sundays. The market is packed with textiles, food, flowers, masks, and everyday local goods.

It’s busy, colorful, and chaotic in a fascinating way. You’ll also find churches, cemeteries, and small rituals happening around town.
This is best done as a guided day trip so you understand what you’re seeing and don’t get overwhelmed by logistics.

4. Iximche Maya Ruins
Iximche is an ancient Maya city that once served as the capital of the Kaqchikel Kingdom. The site features plazas, temples, ball courts, and ceremonial structures spread across a forested hilltop.

It’s an easy half-day trip from Antigua and works well if you’re interested in Maya history but don’t want to travel far.
Going with a guide is highly recommended so the ruins feel meaningful rather than just piles of stone.

5. Coffee & Culture Full-Day Tour
This type of tour bundles several Antigua highlights into one easy day. Most include a stop at Cerro de la Cruz for city views, a guided walking tour through Antigua’s historic center, and a visit to a coffee plantation.

You’ll learn how Guatemalan coffee is grown, processed, and roasted, plus get tastings. Because obviously.
This is a good option if you’re short on time or prefer having logistics handled for you.

6. Acatenango & Fuego Overnight Hike
If you want the most intense adventure near Antigua, this is it. The Acatenango overnight hike is tough, steep, and physically demanding, but it delivers one of the most unforgettable experiences in Guatemala.

You hike up Acatenango and camp with front-row views of Volcán de Fuego, which is actively erupting.
On clear nights, you can watch lava bursts and hear deep booms echo through the valley.

The hike passes through farmland, forest, cloud forest, and volcanic terrain. It’s absolutely not easy, but if you’re reasonably fit and up for type-2 fun, it’s worth every sore muscle. I loved it!

7. ATV Mountain Tour + Hobbitenango
This tour combines riding ATVs through the hills around Antigua with a visit to Hobbitenango, a whimsical, Lord-of-the-Rings-style eco-park.

Stops usually include Cerro de la Cruz for city views, time at Hobbitenango for photos and wandering, a chocolate tasting stop, and lunch in a nearby village.
It’s a fun, more playful day trip that mixes views, light adventure, and sightseeing without a big physical effort.

8. Corazón de Agua Ecological Park
Corazón de Agua Ecological Park is a quieter nature escape just outside Antigua. The park has forest trails, viewpoints, and a more relaxed atmosphere than the popular volcano hikes.

On clear days, you may be able to see toward Lake Atitlán and surrounding hills. Some visitors choose to camp at the top for a small fee, though facilities are basic.
This is a nice option if you want nature without committing to another hardcore volcano mission.
