Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve in Bermuda: A MUST Visit!
Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve is an underrated gem on Bermuda’s southeastern tip, offering an escape from the more bustling areas of the island.
Once a restricted military base and a NASA tracking station, this area has been transformed into a nature reserve that’s perfect for exploring pristine beaches, wildlife, and breathtaking views.
I will say this area is probably one of the more skipped-over areas in Bermuda, surprisingly, but it was one of my favorite spots. Here’s everything you need to know!

Where Is Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve?
Cooper’s Island is located on the southeastern coast of Bermuda, near St. David’s Island.
If you’re coming from Hamilton or other parts of the island, public buses also stop nearby.
You won’t be able to drive into the reserve fully. You’ll park here, just a little outside of Turtle Bay, so that means you’ll be walking the rest of the way.
It’s less than a 15-minute walk from the parking area to the beaches and the Observation Tower.
Why Visit Cooper’s Island Anyway?
- Secluded Beaches: Cooper’s Island features multiple beaches, each with its allure and all hardly busy!
- Observation Tower: Enjoy a 360-degree view of the peninsula, perfect for spotting birds and soaking in the scenery.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for Bermuda’s white-tailed tropicbirds and, if you’re lucky, a sea turtle in the shallow waters.
Top Things to Do at Cooper’s Island
1. Relax at Long Bay Beach
Long Bay Beach is a peaceful stretch of sand with calm waters and stunning views. It’s perfect for a quiet stroll or lounging in the sun.
There’s even a swing for capturing picturesque beach photos. How could I not? It’s definitely one of the best beaches in Bermuda.
2. Climb the Observation Tower
One of the reserve’s coolest spots is the Observation Tower. A rickety but sturdy enough spiral staircase leads you to incredible 360-degree views from the top.
I saw so many birds and had views of the entire reserve’s turquoise coastline and beaches.
3. Explore Turtle Bay Beach
This beach gets its name from a nearby rock formation resembling a turtle. Shallow waters make it a favorite for families.
While there’s a seasonally manned lifeguard station here, the waters are generally calm and safe for swimming.
4. Visit Well Bay Beach
For an even quieter experience, head to Well Bay Beach. You’ll probably have it to yourself. There were only two other people and us during our visit.
You could pop in the water and swim with the fish if you like snorkeling, but it won’t be the best.
5. Stop by Clearwater Beach
Just outside the reserve, Clearwater Beach offers a livelier vibe with white sand, blue umbrellas, and amenities.
A food truck and bar serve up snacks and drinks, and you can watch planes landing at the nearby airport.
