Lake Tekapo: New Zealand’s Most Perfect Lake

1. Hop in a 4WD to Private Scenic Views

Taking a 4×4 adventure in Lake Tekapo is one of the best ways to reach private, stunning scenic views. Tekapo Adventures offers scenic 4WD tours around Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. You’ll pass breathtaking viewpoints, old shelters, and even farm animals to pet.
2. SUP and Kayak Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo’s beautiful waters make it a perfect spot for SUP and kayaking. Rent your equipment from the beach and paddle out to explore the calm waters and pebble shores. The blue lake extends for miles, offering a peaceful experience surrounded by nature.
3. Stargazing

Lake Tekapo is one of the best spots in the world for stargazing due to its minimal light pollution. The Silver River Stargazing tour offers an affordable way to experience the magic of the night sky, with small groups and powerful telescopes to get a closer look at the stars and constellations.

4. Church of Good Shepard

5. Peninsula Walkway

6. Mt John Trail

Hiking Mt John Trail is a must when visiting Lake Tekapo. This 5-mile loop takes you to the top of Mount John, offering sweeping views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Start the hike from the left side for a shaded ascent through the forest, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery all the way down.
7. Cowans Hill Walkway

The Cowans Hill Walkway is a quick 1-2 hour hike that offers beautiful views down Lake Tekapo. It’s an out-and-back trail, mostly flat, and perfect for a leisurely stroll to take in the scenery. Start by the lake and head uphill for great viewpoints along the way.
8. Wander Through Lupins

If you’re visiting Lake Tekapo between November and January, you’ll get the chance to see the fields of blooming lupins. These stunning purple flowers line the roads and shores, offering a beautiful contrast to the blue lake. A must-see during the right season!
9. Visit Lake Pukaki

Located just 45 minutes from Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki is known for its vivid blue waters and stunning views of Mount Cook. While it doesn’t have the same amenities as Tekapo, it’s perfect for a quiet day of lakeside exploration. Visit during lupin season to see thousands of flowers bloom along the shoreline.
