Record numbers of Americans left the US in 2025 — here’s where most of them actually went
180,000 Americans didn’t just visit another country in 2025. They packed up and left it — for good.
That’s the count from a Wall Street Journal analysis of just 15 countries that had released full or partial 2025 data. Fifteen. Out of nearly 200 countries on the planet. The real total is almost certainly a lot higher, and it won’t fully come into focus until every country finishes reporting.
The number is bigger than the headline suggests
Even the undercount is notable on its own. It’s the kind of number that used to only show up in retirement statistics, not among people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who are simply choosing to build a life somewhere else.
So where did they go? Not evenly, and not where you’d necessarily guess.
Portugal keeps absorbing them, tax break or not
The number of Americans living in Portugal has climbed more than 500% since the pandemic, and jumped another 36% in 2024 alone. That’s remarkable considering Portugal killed its famous NHR tax break over a year ago and shut down the golden visa’s real estate route back in 2023 specifically to cool things off.
Neither move slowed the Americans down. If anything, it just means the people moving there now are doing it for the lifestyle, not the tax perks — which, honestly, is probably the healthier reason to move somewhere in the first place. I’ve spent nearly a year collectively in the Algarve, and the numbers on the ground back this up completely.
Ireland just became the express lane
Ireland is where the growth curve gets genuinely wild. Americans moving there roughly doubled between 2024 and 2025, jumping from about 4,900 to 9,600 in a single year. That’s not a gradual trend line — that’s a cliff.
Part of the draw is Ireland’s dual citizenship path through ancestry, which remains one of the more accessible ones open to Americans. If you’ve got Irish grandparents sitting in your family tree, this is the year that fact stopped being trivia.

The UK’s citizenship line just got longer
British citizenship applications from US nationals hit a record 8,790 in 2025 — up 42% from the previous high of 6,192, set just the year before. That’s not tourists overstaying a visa. That’s people going through the formal, paperwork-heavy process of becoming British on purpose.
Two record years back to back tells you this isn’t a blip. It’s a pattern, and it’s accelerating.
What’s actually pulling people out the door
Remote work untangled the old assumption that a career had to live in one zip code. Add rising costs at home and a growing appetite for what daily life looks like elsewhere, and you get a generation of Americans who no longer treat “moving abroad” as a retirement plan or a gap-year stunt — they’re doing it in their prime working years, on purpose.
None of this requires a dramatic reason. Sometimes it’s just math, plus curiosity, plus finally being allowed to work from anywhere.
