Yelapa Waterfalls: There Are TWO!

Yelapa isn’t just a charming village with sandy beaches and chill vibes; it’s also home to not one, but two cool waterfalls that you’ll want to check out!

I loved visiting during my recent trip, but there are a few things to know before going…

In a rush? Here is the quick low down:

  • Visit Yelapa for the day on your own and see Yelapa Waterfall.
  • Take an epic yacht tour and visit cool spots, including Yelapa town and the waterfall.
  • Stay in Yelapa and visit BOTH waterfalls.

Getting to Yelapa

First things first, getting to Yelapa is an adventure on its own. You’ll need to catch a boat from Puerto Vallarta, which is like a mini-cruise with awesome views. It’s about an hour boat ride.

Your other option for getting here is to take a tour like this one. However, do note you will only have time to visit the first waterfall.

OK, now, on to chasing waterfalls!

The Main Yelapa Waterfall (Cascada de Yelapa)

This waterfall is the star of the show in Yelapa. It’s not too far from where the boat drops you off, and getting there is a mini adventure, mostly because you’ll have to avoid horse poop the entire time.

How cool is this waterfall!?

Just follow the path leading out of town, and you’re on your way. Look for the “Cascada Yelapa” sign and you’ll know you’re on the right path.

There’s no road on Google Maps, but you can head towards the pin. The walk is pretty easy, so it’s cool for everyone, even horses.

It’s a pretty cool waterfall, especially considering it’s less than half a mile from town. The waterfall drops about 100 feet into a beautiful pool that’s perfect for a refreshing swim.

A swim is almost mandatory… right?

Hop in, bring a picnic, buy a little something from the small shop, have a beer, snap some photos, just chill… It’s a great spot and a must-do in Yelapa. I loved chilling here on a hot, hot, HOT day!

Yelapa Waterfall #2

Now, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the further waterfall might be calling your name.

This one’s a bit of a hike, and you’ll feel like a real explorer getting there. The path is a mix of jungle trails and river crossings, so make sure you’re wearing shoes that can get wet.

You’ll need to head a bit further downstream.

You’ll start from the beach, head over the Yelapa Bridge and head up the river. Here’s the full trail to follow. It’s a moderate 5-mile round-trip trek.

Reaching this spot is totally worth it. It’s quieter than the main waterfall, and sometimes, you might even have it all to yourself. The water is super refreshing, and chilling here is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Pop by Restaurant Manguito’s, which is at the beginning of the river and the trail, for a quick taco to fuel up and to ask any questions. During the rainy season, the river might become impassable, so ask before heading out.

Do note that if you come for the day or on a tour, you probably won’t have time to go to this waterfall. This one is best visited if you’re staying in Yelapa.

If you don’t have a lot of time in Puerto Vallarta, a tour is the way to go!
