How to Pick the Perfect Underwear for Traveling
Most people spend more time thinking about shoes than underwear when packing for a trip. That feels like a logical prioritization until you are ten hours into an uncomfortable flight, stuck in humid weather, or walking far more than you expected.
Then, when it’s too late, and the underwire is already digging in, underwear suddenly becomes very important. So, to save you from this discomfort and to help you pick the perfect pants (and more) for your vacation, here’s a guide to choosing the best underwear for travelling.

Think About What You Need, Not What Looks Good
The main thing to get right is what you actually need on this trip, not what looks good in a drawer at home.
A weekend city break, a long-haul flight, and a hiking trip all make different demands on your body. Sometimes you’ll need full-cup support, sometimes you’ll need different types of demi bra for switching from day to night outfits, and sometimes you’ll need something that’s breathable and won’t feel gross by the end of the day.
Get The Right Fit
Fit comes first. If something already feels slightly uncomfortable in normal life, it will feel much worse when you’re trapped in a cramped airline seat or hiking in the blazing sunshine.
Waistbands that dig in, tight leg openings, and bras that rub will all get more annoying with heat, sweat, and movement. Travel is not the time to tolerate anything “almost fine”.
So, make sure that every piece of underwear you pack fits comfortably, without digging, pinching, or flapping and chafing.

Pick Good Materials
Material matters more than most people realize. Cotton feels nice at first, but it holds moisture and dries slowly. That is fine at home when you can change easily, but less suitable when you are washing dishes in a sink or spending long hours in hot weather.
Synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester, and spandex dry faster and tend to feel lighter on the body. Merino wool is also popular with frequent travelers because it stays fresh longer and handles temperature changes well.
However, merino wool garments tend to be chunkier, and may take up more space in your case – not ideal if you’ve got limited space to pack.

Focus On Comfort – But Don’t Neglect Style
Comfort usually beats style when you are on the move, but that does not mean you have to wear ugly basics. The best travel underwear is boring in the right ways.
For example, avoid thick seams, stiff lace, hardware that presses into your skin when you sit, and so on – but don’t feel like you have to opt for the granny pants and avoid style entirely. For bras, look for anything that works with multiple outfits, as this will save space and mental effort. For underwear, smooth and simple almost always wins.
Consider Color
Color is a more practical consideration than people expect. Dark shades hide stains and wear much better than white or pale colors.
They also make re-wearing pairs feel less awkward if you are short on clean laundry. Patterns are fine if you like them, but subtle ones are easier to mix with different outfits.
Maybe Multipacks?
Multipacks can be a good idea for longer trips. They are cheaper, easier to replace, and remove decision fatigue when packing.
Look for packs of underwear that can be washed by hand, wrung out, and dried by morning. If something requires special care, delicate cycles, or air-drying for days, it is probably not ideal for travel.
Get Your Underwear Goals Right
When picking your travel underwear, the goal is not perfection and style. The goal is to forget you’re wearing underwear. If you never think about what you are wearing under your clothes while travelling, you’ve made a good choice. That is the real test.
