Europe on a BUDGET ($2k/month and UNDER!)

Europe on a budget isn’t an impossible concept.

I know because my budget isn’t a huge one.

My goal as I travel across the continent is to spend $2,000 per month or less. And I’m proud to say that I often come in way less, like $1,200 or $1,500.

Here’s how…

1. Keeping Transit Costs Low

Cycling across France

Walking and cycling everywhere not only saves money but also keeps you fit and lets you discover hidden gems.

When that’s not feasible, I use trains and buses. Check multiple routes and dates on Omio for the best deals.

Obviously, walkable cities help, too!

2. Accommodations on the Cheap

Renting apartments for longer stays usually beats hotel costs and offers more comfort.

For the adventurous, Couchsurfing and Warmshowers are options.

You can even exchange your skills for free room and board through Worldpackers or do Trustedhousesitters, where you house/pet sit for free rent!

3. Health on the Road

Healthcare in Europe is often much cheaper than in the US. Out-of-pocket expenses are low, and I use this travel insurance to get emergency coverage for under $50/month.

For example, I had dental work done in Portugal for $40 and LASEK in South Korea for less than half price.

4. Solo vs. With a Partner

Traveling with a partner can halve your accommodation costs and provide more options. Solo travel is still budget-friendly, but expect to book more shared spaces like Airbnb rooms.

Either way, you can travel within a reasonable budget.

5. The Savings of Traveling Slow

Traveling slow saves money! Spread out big-ticket items like plane tickets over longer stays to drop your daily costs.

For instance, staying in Portugal for three months allowed me to cut down on transit expenses and enjoy local discounts.

6. Eastern Europe for Under $2k/Month

7. Western Europe for Under $2k/Month

8. When to Travel to Europe

For cheaper prices and fewer tourists, visit Europe during the shoulder seasons (March-May and August-October). You’ll enjoy pleasant weather and lower costs on flights and accommodations.

9. Europe’s Cheapest Destinations
