5 Best Day Trips From Granada, Nicaragua

Granada is already one of Nicaragua’s best stops, but what makes it even better is how much you can do right outside the city.

Crater lakes, volcanoes, tiny islands, and even Ometepe are all within reach.

If you only have a few extra days, these are the five day trips from Granada I’d prioritize.

🛟 Safety

Travel insurance is a must, and it doesn’t have to cost much. Here’s what I use.

1. Laguna de Apoyo

Laguna de Apoyo is the easiest pick if you want a relaxing day.

This huge volcanic crater lake is close to Granada and perfect for swimming, kayaking, and doing basically nothing for a few hours.

We spent a night here, but you definitely don’t need to move hotels just to enjoy it. I’ve got a full Laguna de Apoyo guide covering day passes, where to stay, and how lake access actually works.

Both of these tours include round-trip transportation from Granada, kayaks, and lake access, so you don’t have to sort out a day pass yourself.

2. Masaya Volcano

Masaya Volcano is one of the easiest volcano trips from Granada.

You can drive almost directly to the crater, so this is a good option if you want the volcano experience without committing to a big hike.

We visited during the day and were actually really happy we did because we could clearly see inside the crater, watch the sulfur gases moving around, and take in the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Night visits are still popular, but don’t expect the huge glowing lava lake you may have seen in older photos. I’ve written a full guide to visiting Masaya Volcano during the day vs at night if you’re trying to decide.

No car? A tour is the easiest way to do it, since it handles all the driving for you.

3. Mombacho Volcano

If you want more of an active nature day, Mombacho is probably the one to choose.

The huge volcano sits just outside Granada and is covered in cloud forest, with hiking trails, wildlife, and views over the surrounding area.

We originally planned to do Mombacho and ran out of time, which is probably my biggest Granada-area miss.

You can go with a guide through the cloud forest trails, or explore the slopes by ATV if hiking isn’t your thing.

4. Las Isletas de Granada

Las Isletas barely even qualify as a day trip because they’re right outside Granada, but you absolutely shouldn’t skip them.

Hundreds of tiny volcanic islands are scattered across Lake Nicaragua, filled with mangroves, wildlife, local homes, and views back toward Mombacho.

There are three easy ways to experience them:

  • Take a boat tour: Best if you want to sit back and cover more of the islands.
👉 This Las Isletas boat tour takes you through the islands from Granada.
  • Take a kayak tour: Better if you want something more active and a closer look at the mangroves and waterways.
👉 This Las Isletas kayak tour is the more active option.
  • Stay overnight: This is what we did, and it was easily the coolest option.
👉 We stayed on Isla Mirabel, basically our own tiny private island with kayaks, paddleboards, hammocks, two resident cats, and views across the lake.

Want the full scoop on sleeping out there? Here’s my full Isla Mirabel guide, including what the island is actually like overnight.

5. Ometepe Island

I don’t really think Ometepe should be a day trip.

We spent five nights there and had plenty to do between waterfalls, natural swimming holes, beaches, volcano views, kayaking, and exploring the island.

If you can spare two or three nights, I’d stay there instead. Read my full guide to the best things to do on Ometepe and see how long you’d want to stay.

But if Granada is your base and this is genuinely your only chance to see Ometepe, you can make it work! Something better than nothing.

A full-day tour from Granada gives you a taste of the island without having to organize the ferry and transportation yourself.

I’d consider that the compromise option, not the ideal way to experience Ometepe.

🚗 Getting Around Nicaragua

Getting around Nicaragua doesn’t have to be complicated.

👉 Want the freedom to explore? Compare rental cars here.
👉 Rather skip the driving? Book buses, shuttles, and ferries here.

Which Granada Day Trip Should You Choose?

Want to swim and chill? Laguna de Apoyo.

Want an easy volcano experience? Masaya.

Want hiking and cloud forest? Mombacho.

Want something easy and close to Granada? Las Isletas.

Want the biggest adventure? Ometepe, although I’d stay overnight if you can.

That’s it. Five easy options, all very different, and plenty to fill a few extra days around Granada. For everything to do in the city itself, check out my full Granada guide.
