In a world that’s more connected than ever, learning a new language is not just a hobby; it’s a gateway to diving into cultures, enriching travel experiences, and finding new opportunities.

As a traveler and digital nomad, finding the right tool to break down language barriers is crucial.

That’s where language learning apps come in, and Mondly has emerged as a notable contender.

As someone who’s been navigating the nuances of Spanish while trotting the globe (not easy btw), I’ve turned to Mondly in hopes of improving mi Español!

So is Mondly worth it? Let’s see…

Overview of Mondly

Mondly takes a dynamic approach to language learning and is designed to make it more engaging and accessible for people of all ages.

With a wide array of languages on offer (41)—from common tongues like Spanish and French to less frequently offered options like Finnish and Hungarian—Mondly caters to a diverse user base.

Its philosophy centers around learning through practical conversation and interactive exercises, aiming to mimic the natural way we learn languages through real-life interactions.

Unique Features of Mondly

Mondly distinguishes itself with several key features that set it apart from other language learning apps:

  • Interactive Exercises: Mondly focuses heavily on practical vocabulary and real-life conversations, helping learners apply their knowledge outside the digital classroom.
  • Augmented Reality (AR) Experiences: One of the more futuristic features, Mondly’s AR tool immerses learners in scenarios where they can interact with virtual objects and characters.
  • Speech Recognition: The app incorporates advanced speech recognition to provide feedback on pronunciation, an essential aspect of mastering any language.
  • Daily Lessons: Mondly keeps users engaged with daily lessons designed to be informative and manageable, encouraging consistent practice.
  • Chatbot Conversations: Mondly’s chatbot simulates discussions to improve conversational skills.

What Are Mondly Lessons Like?

Each lesson in Mondly is structured to build on previous knowledge, gradually increasing in complexity as you progress.

The setup includes a variety of exercises such as word matching, sentence formation, and spoken dialogue—all aimed at bettering comprehension and speaking abilities.

Lessons cater to learners at all levels, from beginner to advanced, so there’s always something new to challenge you as your skills develop.

Their lessons are quick and easy to do anywhere. All you need is just a few minutes, so there is always time to fit a lesson in.

There are daily lessons and themed lessons (i.e., travel, hobbies, greetings) to choose from at your will.

Subscription Options: Free vs. Premium

Mondly offers both free and premium subscription options.

The free version provides access to basic lessons and daily challenges—but your options are limited, and it lacks speech recognition.

The premium subscription unlocks a wealth of resources, including access to all lessons, languages, and advanced features like AR experiences and chatbot conversations.

While I’m all about freebies, for $10/ a month or less than $50/ year, it’s VERY reasonably priced.

My Mondly Review: What I Like About It

The Set Up

Mondly has a user-friendly interface and a fun setup on its homepage. I like that it has a “daily lesson” but then other topics to tackle. This set up alone MAKES ME do two lessons, my daily and one other one.

For some reason this app has trained me to do a themed lesson AND my daily lesson which I love!

The weekly and monthly quizzes are great motivators; it’s probably the only time in my life I’ve liked a test.

Verb Conjugations With a Click

I love its ability to show a verb conjugation in the past, present, and future. Just click the verb, and it’s displayed. This is a big weakness for me.

Verb conjugations with a click? This is SO helpful!

When I was living in Sayulita, I would constantly use the “yo” form and then later correct it, so I’m in desperate need of the practice.

Chat Bot

I’m definitely speaking more with Mondly than I have with other apps, which is great, and it’s all thanks to the chat bot.

I haven’t used an app with this, and it’s cool. You can have a conversation with a bot about real life situations.

I have a digital nomad job, so while I’m in front of my computer a lot, I DO go outside and have to interact with locals every day. I always make sure I get the basics down, at the least.

Speech Recognition

The speech recognition technology was pretty impressive. I KNEW I slipped up on the pronunciation of a word, and it called me out on it and made me say it again.

It even noticed something as small as an extra “a” in my speech!

Real Voices

The audio quality is great, they use voice actors who actually speak the language, at least in the Spanish version. No robotic-sounding voices.

My Mondly Review: What Can Be Improved

AR Feature

The AR feature is innovative, and it’s an immersive twist to language learning. I think it could be cool, but it’s not there yet.

There wasn’t an option to select my level, so my first lesson was learning the words for lion and chicken.

Mondly AR feature showing an AI woman and a lion with "un leon" written above the lion.
This is literally my living room, by the way! It’s like “in your room” learning. It’s very cool but a bit too high-tech and unnecessary for me.

I also didn’t like the fact that this was a separate app download. It would be better if it was all accessible from the same app. This is however an added feature, so you don’t need to use this to learn if you don’t want.

Repetition, Even in Higher Levels

The content is sometimes repetitive, and I would appreciate more variety in lessons and exercises.

I had to learn the Spanish word for “piano” numerous times even though I was in the intermediate course.

By the way, the word for piano in Spanish is “piano” – so, yeah, I had to “push through” a bit to get through those lessons.

Grammar Lessons

I wish there was more of a focus on grammar; this is arguably the most difficult part of learning a language.

While you can click the verb and get all the conjugations for three tenses (which I love), the “missing word” or “spelling quiz” didn’t offer to test my verb and conjugation skills.

Mondly app showing "casa" as a missing word in a sentence.
In an intermediate lesson, it would have been better to focus on conjugating the word “vivir” instead of “learning” the word “casa.”

I don’t need more help learning basic words like piano and house. It would have been better to learn more about the conjugations of the verb “tocar” (to play an instrument), or “vivir” (to live), for example.

I am still learning with the app, so I’m not sure if this will still come with time, but considering I’m at an intermediate level, I would have expected at least a few challenges with verb conjugations.

My Mondly Review: Conclusion

I must admit, Mondly has been really fun to play with, and I will continue using it to help with my Spanish. I plan on spending lots more time in my fav countries—Mexico, Ecuador, and Spain!

While this app, like most apps, won’t get you fluent, it’s such a good resource for learning a language, and it’s really helping me keep myself accountable as well as practicing.

It definitely has a few things I’d love to see improve, but hey, I haven’t found a perfect language learning app yet! Let me know if you have.

Its cool features, like the chat bots, daily and themed lessons, as well as the fun and motivating layout, MAKE ME want to continue learning—Which is really half the battle when it comes to learning a language.

Mondly is overall fun, and I’m keeping my Spanish fresh. I can’t ask for much more.
