Las Peñitas, Nicaragua: Things to Do + Is It Worth Visiting?
Las Peñitas is the easy beach escape from León. You can leave the colonial streets behind, be on the Pacific coast in roughly half an hour, and spend the day swimming, surfing, hanging by a pool, exploring mangroves, or waiting for sunset.
We spent a day driving around Las Peñitas and neighboring Poneloya, and while I liked it, the area was more spread out and sleepy than I expected.
If you’re already in León and want an easy beach day, it’s worth it. If your Nicaragua itinerary is packed and you’re heading to other Pacific beaches anyway, I wouldn’t sacrifice something major to squeeze it in.

🛟 Safety
Travel insurance is a must, and it doesn’t have to cost much. Here’s what I use.
1. Chill on Las Peñitas Beach
Las Peñitas has a long stretch of dark Pacific sand with plenty of room to swim, walk the beach, watch surfers, and basically do nothing for a while.
My advice? Don’t try to cover the whole thing. Las Peñitas is basically one long beach strip, and walking around in the Nicaragua heat isn’t especially fun.

Pick a nice section of beach, restaurant, or hotel and use it as your base.
We stopped at SUA, a casual beach club/restaurant with drinks, a swing, beach views, and easy parking when we visited.
2. Get a Pool Day Pass
Honestly, this might be my favorite way to visit Las Peñitas from León.
Several beachfront hotels offer day passes, giving you a pool, shade, bathrooms, food, drinks, and easy beach access without staying overnight.
Hotel Tranquilo currently offers day passes with access to its pool, beach loungers, shaded seating, showers, bathrooms, and beach area. When we visited, we also found hotels including El Belga Loco and Nayal offering pool access.

👉 If I came back for another day trip, I’d probably grab a beachfront hotel day pass, bounce between the pool and ocean, and stay through sunset.
Message the hotel beforehand since day-pass prices and policies can change.
3. Explore Isla Juan Venado Nature Reserve
If you want an actual activity, Isla Juan Venado is probably the biggest reason to visit Las Peñitas.
The protected reserve runs along the coast and is filled with mangroves and birdlife. Boat and kayak trips take you through the waterways looking for wildlife.

We didn’t have enough time for the full excursion. We stopped around the Estación de Isla Juan Venado, where we saw fishing boats and plenty of birds, but this is the activity I’d add if I returned.

4. Check Out La Peña del Tigre
Between Las Peñitas and Poneloya is La Peña del Tigre, a quirky little coastal viewpoint around a rocky outcrop.

There are colorful stairs, giant marine-life statues, a cross on the rocks, and nice straight-on views down the beach.
It’s random, colorful, and an easy quick photo stop while you’re already exploring the area.
5. Go Surfing
Las Peñitas is also a surf destination, with local surf schools offering lessons and board rentals.
We didn’t surf here because it was pretty flat when we visited, so I’m not going to pretend I can tell you which peak to paddle out at.
But if you want to try surfing while staying in León, it’s an easy place to arrange a lesson. IF the waves are participating!

6. Stay for Sunset
The Pacific sunset is one of the main reasons to stick around.
Spend the afternoon swimming or hanging by a pool, grab a drink, and stay until the sun drops into the ocean.
Las Peñitas vs. Poneloya
Las Peñitas and Poneloya basically run into each other along the coast, but for travelers, I’d choose Las Peñitas.
Poneloya felt quieter and more residential when we visited, with a handful of hotels and restaurants but not much reason to make a separate trip unless you’re staying there.
Is Las Peñitas Worth Visiting?
Yes, as an easy beach break from León.
It’s a good fit if you want a beach or pool day, surfing, Isla Juan Venado, or a lazy afternoon before sunset.
I wouldn’t build an entire Nicaragua trip around Las Peñitas, especially if you’re already heading to the beaches around San Juan del Sur or Popoyo. But as an add-on to León, it works perfectly.

How Long Do You Need in Las Peñitas?
For most people, half a day to one full day is plenty.
Head out before lunch, spend the afternoon at the beach or pool, add Isla Juan Venado if you want an activity, and stay for sunset.
I’d only stay one or two nights if surfing or having a slow beach stay is specifically part of your plan and you don’t have time to go to the beaches in the south.
How to Get From León to Las Peñitas
Las Peñitas is roughly 20 kilometers from León, with the drive taking around 20 to 30 minutes.
- Local bus: Cheapest option.
- Taxi/private transfer: Easiest if you don’t want to deal with the bus.
- Your own vehicle: Gives you the most flexibility, although parking and some access roads can be awkward.
We had our own car, which was convenient, but parking was slightly annoying.
If you’re also volcano boarding Cerro Negro, ask your tour company if they currently offer transport or an add-on to Las Peñitas. Some León operators have offered this in the past.

Getting Around Las Peñitas
Las Peñitas is more spread out than it looks.
You can walk quite a bit of it, but you’re basically following one long strip in the heat. If you’re visiting for the day, decide what you actually want to do beforehand.
Juan Venado + beach or pool + sunset is already a solid day.

Where to Stay in Las Peñitas
If you stay overnight, I’d prioritize somewhere near the beach with a pool.
- Hotel Tranquilo: Beachfront with a pool, restaurant, bar, and relaxed resort feel.
- El Belga Loco: Great-value option with a pool, bar, and beach access.
- Nuevo Nayal: A few steps from the beach with an infinity pool, garden, terrace, and restaurant.
- Cabañas Puesta del Sol: Smaller and chilled, with a pool and the beach just steps away.
If sightseeing in León is still your priority, I’d stay in León and visit Las Peñitas for the day. If you want pool + beach + surfing + doing very little for a couple of days, staying here makes more sense.

Las Peñitas Travel Tips
- Bring sun protection: Shade is scarce once you’re out on the beach.
- Don’t plan to walk everywhere: The area is spread out and hot.
- Confirm day passes beforehand: Prices and availability can change.
- Driving? Check parking and road access for the specific place you’re visiting.
- Stay for sunset: It’s one of the best reasons to make the trip from León.
Las Peñitas isn’t somewhere I’d cram into an overloaded Nicaragua itinerary.
But after climbing around León and throwing yourself down Cerro Negro, a pool, the Pacific Ocean, and doing very little for an afternoon sounds pretty damn good.
