12 Ways to Travel For *almost* FREE and 2 to AVOID!

“I can’t travel because I don’t have the money for it.”

This is everyone’s ultimate excuse for not traveling.

BUT! There are ways to travel for free, or at least for very cheap!

Sure, you’re probably not going to be sitting poolside at a fancy resort, but if you open your mind to other ways to travel, you can explore the world and spend very little money doing so.

1. Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to travel for free. You’ll work in exchange for free accommodation and maybe even meals.

For example, I stayed in Xela, Guatemala, teaching my new friend Krista English, and in return, I stayed at her house for free.

Many companies can connect you with volunteer opportunities abroad, like WWOOF, HelpX, WorkAway, and Worldpackers (use code NINA10 for $10 off!).

2. Peace Corps

If you’re looking for a long-term volunteer commitment, the Peace Corps offers rewarding positions with great benefits, including paid transportation and accommodation. The process might take time, but it’s worth it!

3. Couchsurf

A group trip to Europe means immediate friends.

No money for accommodation? Try Couchsurfing. It allows you to stay somewhere short-term for free. It’s a great way to meet locals and fellow travelers, though it may not be for everyone.

4. Housesitting and Petsitting

With TrustedHousesitters, you can live somewhere for free while taking care of adorable pets. I got almost a month of free accommodation in Europe this way—perfect for budget travelers! Get 25% off the membership.

5. Save on Transportation

Traveling for free isn't too hard!

Transportation can be expensive, but walking is free and a great way to explore. If it’s too far, hitchhiking or using local transportation options like songtaews in Thailand can save you money. Overnight transportation can also help you save on accommodation costs.

6. Travel Hacking

7. Save on Sightseeing

Many cities offer free walking tours, which are great for sightseeing on a budget. You can also explore scenic hiking trails, lush parks, and beautiful beaches for free.

8. Make Friends!

Traveling the world for free isn't as hard as you think.

Making friends can help you cut costs by sharing expenses like taxis and hotel rooms. Plus, locals might even offer you a place to stay for free!

9. Use the Seasons

Traveling during the shoulder or low season can save you money on flights, hotels, and activities. Fewer crowds also make for a more genuine travel experience.

Ha Giang Loop—here you go!

Becoming an influencer isn’t a free ticket to travel. It’s a job that requires a lot of work, and while you may get perks like free stays, you’ll spend most of your time working and not enjoying the trip.

Don’t take advantage of locals, haggle unfairly, or begpack. It’s important to be respectful and considerate when traveling, and always be prepared financially—never expect handouts.
