A Guide to Unique Experiences in the Bahamas

On most Caribbean luxury vacations, it’s all about sipping cocktails, snorkeling and relaxing in the sunshine on the best beaches. But in the Bahamas, it’s a different story.

One of the more adventurous archipelagos in the Caribbean, the Bahamas offers so many unique experiences—visitors won’t know which to choose! Whether you’re coming by cruise to the Bahamas or flying in for a few days, there’s something cool to do waiting for you.

Let me break it down for you with this list of the most memorable ways to explore the Bahamas.

1. Fishing in the Gulf Stream

While fishing isn’t a unique experience in and of itself, the fishing in the Bahamas is world class. Here, you can pluck sea life directly from the Gulf Stream, a powerful warm current rushing north past the Bahamas.

These rushing waters are filled with everything from tuna and swordfish to marlin. With fish like that swimming around, it’s no surprise that Hemingway frequented the area in the 1930s.

2. Jumping Into Uncle Charlie’s Blue Hole

Head to the island of Andros to explore one of the most well know blue holes. Also known as the Little Frenchman Blue Hole, Uncle Charlie’s Blue Hole is said to descend hundreds of feet. Fresh water on top, the further down you go, the saltier it gets.

Grab hold of the nearby rope swing and make a splash. The cavern makes the perfect swimming hole with calm waters and a somewhat secluded location. Just don’t get caught up in the stories of those who are said to have disappeared down below.

3. Exploring the Hatchet Bay Cave

This extensive cave system, located on the island of Eleuthera, has three underground layers ready and waiting to be explored. Travel directly from one exit to the other so you don’t get lost.

Inside Hatchet Bay Cave, you’ll find deep red and brown formations—stalactites and stalagmites that are still growing within the caves. The deeper you go, the wetter it gets, with slippery mud pits and fragile formations located on the lowest level. Make sure not to go too deep during high tide and watch for the bats that flutter around the caves at night.

4. Mingling with the Animals

One of the greatest things about the Bahamas is how easy it is for visitors to surround themselves with animals. Guests can book underwater encounters with dolphins, sharks and stingrays, but it doesn’t end there.

One of the major draws of the Bahamas over other Caribbean islands is the chance to swim with pigs at the Exuma cays. Unlike anything you’ve seen before, these piglets run out into the waves when they hear the boats coming. Jump overboard and tred the shallow water alongside these adorable creatures.

5. Adventuring At a Shipwrecked Beach

With a pirate museum in Nassau and various shipwrecks throughout the Bahamas, fans of these historic marauders will be thrilled. Morgan’s Bluff Beach is home to beachside caves, said to be the site of buried 17th century pirate treasure. See for yourself!

Especially relevant, check out the rust-covered shipwrecked boat in the neighboring harbor.

6. Heading Underwater—On a SUB

In this case, SUB is not short for submarine but for Scenic Underwater Bubbles. Snorkeling is always exciting, especially on a tropical island, but these SUBs will change the way you explore underwater.

Shaped like an oversized yellow seahorse, these SUBs allow visitors to descend up to 15 feet. Zip past the coral reefs and immerse yourself in schools of colorful fish. The controls are simple and the experience is one-of-a-kind—plus no snorkeling gear is necessary!
