Most visitors glimpse through Grundarfjörður only to get to Kirkjufell, but for those who look deeper, this quaint town has so much more to offer. The small town is quiet, feels real, and is nestled in breathtaking nature, especially when compared to the more crowded areas of Iceland.
One thing I realized quickly is that you need to be able to roam around freely to see the genuine magic of this location. You may travel and see places that visitors don’t usually go to when you renting a 4×4 campervan you will travel more safely. Some roads are made of gravel, and the weather can change in a matter of minutes. A good car is a must.
This is a different view at Grundarfjörður, things that you might not find in every tour.

1. See Kirkjufell from your window when you wake up
Of course, everyone snaps pictures of Kirkjufell, but have you ever slept close to it? If you’re driving a campervan, you may park at one of the neighboring camping places and wake up to see the mountain shining in the morning light. It feels far more unique to watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee as the waterfall flows peacefully nearby than to merely take pictures with a lot of other people.

2. Eat lunch by a waterfall that isn’t easy to find
While the area has a plethora of breathtaking sights, all too often people rush to check them off their itineraries rather than explore. If you are willing to travel off the beaten path, there are many smaller waterfalls to be uncovered.

You can grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafes and just soak in the moment. There is no “touristic” value to this and that is the beauty of it; this is candid Icelandic life.

Instead than standing next to other tourists near Kirkjufell, drive a little bit out of town and look for your own dark, open place. There is no need to put too much effort as Grundarfjörður is famous for its lack of light pollution.
That same evening, I parked on the backroads, muted my vehicle and waited. The moment the sky lit up with flowing green waves, it was as if the universe put on a private show just for me.

Don’t bother with costly spas; instead, look for tiny hot tubs or geothermal pools in your area. One of the finest ways to end the day is to sit in warm water with mountains all around you and cool air on your face.
