What to Do With 3 Days in Cappadocia, Turkey
Cappadocia looks like a cartoon where an alien desert was sketched and then hot-air balloons were sprinkled on top. It’s gorgeous, a little chaotic, and honestly… a tad confusing if it’s your first time.
This plan is exactly what I did with some tips for other options—everything here keeps things simple, car-free, and fun.
I’ll show you where to watch the balloons (without elbowing strangers), which hikes actually make sense, and how to slot in optional tours if you want to sleep when you’re dead and go hard—because hey, Cappadocia is a once-in-a-lifetime trip—right?!

🛟 Safety
Travel insurance is a must, and it doesn’t have to cost much—Here’s what I use.
Cappadocia Day 1
Rooftop balloon views and wandering around.
Watch the Balloons from Your Hotel Rooftop
Most Göreme stays have some kind of rooftop—check photos before booking to make sure the view is legit.
We stayed at Bedrock Cave Hotel and had perfect, crowd-free views. You’ll get the balloon burners glowing and the whole sky filling up—no weird “Instagram lines,” no stress.

Honestly, the pictures are cool, but they do no justice. It truly is MAGICAL to witness this with your own two eyes!
You must be up before sunrise to get the best “show.” Sunrise varies by season, so look it up for your dates, then aim to be on the roof ~30–45 minutes before sunrise to catch the prettiest light and burner flares.
Over the Hill to Rocket/Görkündere
Stroll up and over Aşıklar Tepesi (Lovers’ Hill) (there was a small fee when we went; prices change—we paid 40 TRY pp) and drop into Rocket/Görkündere Valley for an easy, photogenic roam (~1.5–2 hours).

Think sculpted “rocket” spires (ahem… very phallic), sandy singletrack, and way fewer people than you’d expect (we only saw three other small groups the whole time!).
We also passed Al Nazar Church en route and continued toward the Voyager Balloon Takeoff area for more mellow trails and big valley views.
There isn’t a bad view for a mile around here. Pure insane alien territory to roam at your leisure.
Cappadocia Day 2
Get up in a balloon and hike a “museum.”
Hot-Air Balloon Ride
Going up in a hot air balloon is obviously the most popular thing to do in Cappadocia.
Book ahead; hotel pickup is early. If heights aren’t your thing, rooftop watching again is still peak Cappadocia—you won’t feel left out (that’s what we did!).

If you want to ride, try to schedule it as early in your trip as possible in case wind cancels your first attempt.
👉 BOOK IT:
Classic Cappadocia, going up in a hot air balloon to see the Mars-like landscape from above!
Pick One Museum

- Göreme Open-Air Museum: Compact, iconic frescoes—very “Cappadocia 101.”
- Zelve Open-Air Museum: More spread out, fewer crowds, great for wandering.
Both are great—choose your vibe and energy level.
Cappadocia Day 3
Head to Uçhisar for the day and walk back.
Uçhisar Castle
Take the bus easily from Göreme to Uçhisar (about 10 minutes; cheap and frequent). Head to the castle area.

You can pay to climb inside if you want, but honestly, wandering the outside paths and nearby chimneys gives you most of the views without the queue or fee. We loved the outside loop and kept with our hiking theme.
Hike Pigeon Valley Back to Göreme
This direction is the move—bus up to Uçhisar, hike down to Göreme. If you do it the opposite way, just know you’ll be hiking uphill instead of down.
Figure ~1.5–2 hours or so for the hike and a few photo stops. Surfaces are hardpack with loose grit on top: wear real shoes.

There’s a small rope section to maneuver and a few narrow bits with minor drop-offs, but overall, Pigeon Valley is a straightforward, moderate hike. The views keep delivering, and it’s a fun way to get back into Göreme.
Obviously, the bus back is an option if this isn’t your thing, but we loved wandering around all day and the hikes in Cappadocia.
Cappadocia Itinerary Options:
Sunrise here is magical—but it’s also early. We found ourselves tired mid-day since we were up at sunrise every morning, but we tried to push through to see more!
If you’re like an Energizer Bunny, you can fit a lot more into your days than what I have above.

Great Optional Add-Ons:
All of these are fun and quick tour options that let you experience the insane Cappadocia landscape with a bit of flair, whether that’s an ATV, a classic car, or going underground! These are great if hiking isn’t really your thing, too.
- Classic Car Photo Session — easy, photogenic golden hour set.
- ATV Sunset Ride — high energy; bring eye cover and a buff.
- Horseback Ride — mellow, gorgeous at golden hour.
- Underground Cities — Turkey’s largest excavated underground city.
- Avanos Pottery Making — make your own clay souvenir to bring home.
- Gourde Lamps – or make a lamp from a gourde with a local.
Less Than 3 Days Here? Book This Tour!
You can book this combo Cappadocia tour that stitches the best bits into one efficient outing (great if you’ve got less than three days or want to skip route-finding).

You’ll hit marquee valleys, viewpoints, and photo angles without backtracking, dead ends, or hoping to stumble upon the right spot while you get lost!

This is a great combo tour of all of Cappadocia’s highlights and wanders!
Where to Stay: Göreme vs. Uçhisar
Stay in Göreme (My Pick). Lively, central, and perfect for rooftop balloon watching. You’re closer to tours, cafés, and trailheads, and you won’t need as brutal a wake-up call for balloon pickups.
It’s touristy—but that also means easy shuttles and lots of hotels with truly epic balloon views.
We stayed at Bedrock Cave Hotel, which had amazing views and a really nice rooftop breakfast too.

Uçhisar (Quieter, Farther). Peaceful and castle-centric, but sleepy beyond the castle area.
You’ll likely wake earlier for balloon rides and tours, and get more distant balloon views from rooftops. Great for hush-hush nights; less convenient for everything else imo.
Bottom Line: Choose Göreme for convenience and those balloons-over-your-roof moments; pick Uçhisar only if you value quiet over proximity.
👉 Accommodation in Cappadocia
Getting To and Around Cappadocia

- Getting Here (Airports):
- Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV): Closest; ~35–45 minutes to Göreme by shuttle.
- Kayseri Erkilet (ASR): Bigger and often cheaper; ~60–80 minutes to Göreme. This is the one we used.
- Airport → Göreme: Pre-book a shared or private shuttle on Bookaway, like I did. They waited for us right outside the airport with a sign.
- Local Buses: Cheap and frequent between Göreme, Uçhisar, Avanos, Ürgüp. Pay on board; ask the driver for your stop.
- On Foot: Valleys and viewpoints around Göreme are very walkable, plus hiking around it is kind of the best thing to do in Cappadocia.
- Tours With Pickup: Book a tour around the area, most offer hotel pickup—no car needed.
Where to Eat

- Mozaik Restaurant — Beef clay pot that slaps; surprise yogurt and za’atar (my fav!) appetizer
- Afara Restaurant & Cafe — “Inside” a cave; excellent meze platter that fills you more than you’d think.
- Taste of Moms — Turkish pancakes in grandma’s house, like… literally.
- Mother’s Kitchen — Garrett’s “Mommy Special” (meat-pizza vibes); cheese mantı (ravioli)
- Goat Coffee Kapadokya — Lovely perch; coffee is only ok, but the location is nice.
Practical Tips (Read This—It’ll Save You Time)

- Book a View, Not a Crowd. Prioritize hotels with solid rooftops (check photos). Since you’re waking up for sunrise, it’s way easier to walk upstairs than hustle across town looking for some random Insta-Cafe.
- Plan Two Balloon Mornings. Weather and wind can cancel flights or change routes; watching/riding can be totally different day to day. If you nail it the first morning—amazing. If not, you’ve got a backup.
- Sunrise Timing. Aim to be in place ~30–45 minutes before sunrise. About 30min-1hr after sunrise, most balloons are landing.
- Footwear Matters. Trails are hard surface with loose sand/gravel—slippy in regular shoes and flip flops are a no-go (and I’m flip flop queen, trust me!)
- Cielings Crumble. Oh right, forgot to mention—the cave hotels crumble before your very eyes! This is normal. Some fell on my face in the middle of the night.
- Use AllTrails. Lots of routes are clearly marked; tracking avoids dead ends and wasted time while still letting you wander.
