Atami, El Salvador: Cliffside Beach Resort With Ocean Pools
Atami sits quietly on its cliffside perch above the Pacific with crashing waves below.
It has an easy, unpretentious energy that’s a little different from the more polished resorts and beach clubs along the coast, and I mean that as a compliment.
It’s a very small town with essentially one major place to visit: Atami Resort. Simply for its one unique feature…
I visited during my trip through El Salvador. Here’s what to know.

Quick Lowdown on Atami
- Atami Escape Resort is a cliffside beach resort that’s been a beloved local spot for over 50 years. Unpretentious, relaxed, and essentially the only ‘thing to do’ in this town.
- Get there for $0.50 on the chicken bus from the main coastal highway, then walk down to the resort
- You can stay at Atami Escape Resort or visit on a day pass ($25 per person), which includes $12 in food and drink credit at their restaurant.
- The saltwater ocean pools are the real highlight. Three constructed pools fed by the crashing ocean, totally unique and worth the trip alone
- Day trips to El Tunco, El Zonte, Mizata, Santa Ana Volcano, and Tamanique Waterfalls all easily doable from here

🛟 Safety
Travel insurance is a must, and it doesn’t have to cost much—Here’s what I use.
How to Get to Atami
Catch a local chicken bus (the old-school converted school buses that run along the main coastal highway) heading in the direction of the town of Atami.

Your fare will be $0.50 if you’re coming from Zonte or Tunco. Ask to be dropped at Atami, then walk down from the highway to the resort entrance. The whole thing is straightforward and budget-friendly.
If you’d rather skip the bus, the resort is about a 15-minute drive from El Tunco and under an hour from San Salvador by car or Uber.

Exploring the Town of Atami
Heads up: Atami, the town, is quiet. Very quiet. Walking in from the highway, it doesn’t feel like much of a town at all; it’s mostly residential streets and small guest houses. But here’s how it breaks down:

- To the left of the resort (when facing the ocean) is a nearly empty stretch of beach with barely another soul on it. Almost private, very peaceful, worth a wander if you want quiet sand to yourself
- To the right is where the “action” is, relatively speaking. Walk the beach in that direction, and you’ll find a couple of beach bars and then a small cobblestoned road with a couple of casual restaurants and a little shop
- That’s genuinely it. A quick stroll, a local bite, and you’ll have seen everything there is to see
The resort is the destination here, not the town.
Atami Escape Resort
Perched on a cliffside with Pacific Ocean views in every direction, Atami Escape Resort is the anchor of this whole area and has been for over half a century.

It’s a proper resort with hotel rooms, two restaurants, green grounds, a beachfront boardwalk, and several pools. The vibe was pretty relaxed and low-key.

Stay Here or Day Pass?
Both are solid options. The hotel has rooms if you want to wake up to those ocean views, but the day pass is the move for many visitors

The day pass runs $25 per person (valid 7am to 6pm), and $12 of that comes back to you as food and drink credit at the restaurant. So you’re effectively paying $13 out of pocket for a full day. Good value.

If you’re coming with a group, you can upgrade to one of the palapa bungalows dotted around the property; each has a picnic table and hammocks and its own little hangout zone.
Coming solo like I did? Skip it and grab a lounger by the pool.

The Saltwater Ocean Pools: The Real Highlight
Here’s the thing that makes Atami genuinely special: three constructed saltwater pools built right into the cliffside, fed by the ocean crashing in!

You’re in the water, waves are splashing around you, open ocean views in front of you. It’s a unique experience that you won’t find at most beach clubs anywhere.
Easily the most memorable part of the property, and reason enough to make the trip.
Day Trips from Atami

- El Tunco: The most popular beach town on this stretch of coast, about 15 minutes east. Busier and more touristy than the Atami area, but great for restaurants, nightlife, and catching a livelier beach scene.
- El Zonte: Just beyond El Tunco, El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach) is the surf town with a global reputation. Black sand, consistent waves, good food, and a community vibe.
- Mizata: Head west along the coast and you’ll hit Mizata, home to NAWI Beach House — an adults-only beach club by Mizata Antiresort with an infinity pool and stunning Pacific views. One of the most impressive beach club setups in El Salvador.
Quick Tips for Visiting Atami

- No reservation needed for the day pass — just show up between 7am and 6pm, you might want to book in advance on weekends and holidays.
- Bring cash for anything beyond your food credit, including the chicken bus
- Weekdays are quieter — it’s a family-friendly crowd and weekends get busier
- Groups should consider the palapa upgrade for a proper hangout base on the property
