5 Hidden Australian Beach Towns Where You Can Live and Work!

While places like Byron Bay often hog the spotlight, there are plenty of lesser-known coastal gems that are on the rise. This is according to working holiday expert Matthew Heyes, founder of Backpacker Job Board—Australia’s go-to job site for backpackers.

Matthew has given his rundown of five beach towns that are on the rise with backpackers. If you’re seeking laid-back surf and stunning scenery, be sure to check out these coastal escapes.

1. Agnes Water & 1770, QLD

Even though it’s situated at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, these twin towns are still a bit sleepy, small-town in character. It is great for those into surfing, reef trips, or simply just chillin’ out by the sea.

Hospitality or tourism jobs are a pretty safe bet. You could pick up work at a local café, hostel, or even booking tours to Lady Musgrave Island.

2. Yamba, NSW

Yamba is fast becoming a hot spot for surfers, with world-class breaks and pristine beaches. The town itself is friendly, with a strong sense of community and an emerging café scene.

Surf instructors are in high demand, and plenty of casual hospitality gigs pop up in local bars and eateries. If you like the surf culture, or you would like to learn, this is a great place to stay.

3. Crescent Head, NSW

Favourite with longboarders, Crescent Head has all the feel of a classic coastal town, minus the crowds. It’s all about stunning headland walks, deserted beaches, and evenings kicking back watching the sun go down.

You’ll find more common opportunities here at surf camps and retreats. You may be responsible for anything from lessons to welcoming guests and gear maintenance. It is one of those beautiful opportunities to combine a love of the ocean with relaxed living.

4. Esperance, WA

Esperance boasts some of the whitest sand and bluest water in the country. Add to that famous beach-roaming kangaroos at Lucky Bay and spectacular nearby national parks and you have an absolute nature lover’s must-see.

Tourism and hospitality jobs are increasing as more people discover Esperance. You could help out as a tour guide, run snorkelling trips, or pull pints at a local pub during peak season.

5. Exmouth, WA

With whale shark swims and the Ningaloo Reef, Exmouth is more and more known for the beach vibes and laid-back locals. It offers epic underwater adventure activities in any month under the sun.

Dive shops and marine tour companies often look for backpackers to assist with bookings, gear hire, or even join as deckhands on charter boats. You’ll likely snag discounts (or free sessions) on snorkelling and diving trips.
