Is It Cheaper to Travel Than JUST EXIST in The USA?
What if I told you I lived abroad, traveling, having cool experiences around the world, for LESS MONEY than you pay right now, just existing in the USA?
We’ve already been over the fact that living abroad costs less than you think, but truly think about this:
I spend LESS on my life than you do.
- And I live around the world.
- And travel often.
- My backyard constantly changes.
- I’m getting more value out of my money.
- And I am even SAVING money faster than many can afford to do so back in the USA.
When I first moved abroad, I wasn’t rich. In fact, I was far from it. (still am)
But by living in countries with a lower cost of living (almost anywhere is cheaper than the US), I managed to get way more value out of my money and…
Get this:
I’ve saved money and even paid off over $30k in student loans!
Anyone back home I know with a student loan has at least 10-15 years of payments left.
And here I am – 39, completely debt-free, all thanks to living abroad.
Comparing Costs: USA vs. Abroad
Living in the USA can be expensive. Rent, utilities, healthcare, and everyday expenses add up quickly. In many countries, these costs are significantly lower.
Here’s a quick comparison:
- Rent: In the USA, rent can easily be $1,500+ per month. In countries like Thailand or Vietnam, you can find a decent apartment for $300-$500 per month.
Even when living in Portugal, I was paying $500/month (although that was a few years ago, and prices have gone up) - Food: Eating out in the USA can be pricey. Abroad, you can enjoy delicious meals for a fraction of the cost. I ate fresh grilled octopus, salad, and wine for $15 in Greece and had my fav “expensive version” of Khao Soi in Thailand for $2.50.
- Healthcare: Medical expenses in the USA can be overwhelming. Many countries offer affordable healthcare options. I just went to the fanciest dentist while in Vietnam for a cleaning and paid $20.
This is just a small example of how living costs can be SO MUCH CHEAPER abroad, but don’t forget:
- The added value your dollar gets when you live in a place like Greece or Thailand, for example, and can walk outside your front door and have a beach, or temple, or a market to explore. (Your mental health SOARS with this simple option, trust me.)
- The freedom you have when you can WALK places instead of drive (eliminating the need for car payments, insurance, etc.)
- The relief you feel when your living costs go from strangling you until your last penny drops to a loose collar around your neck that allows for more freedom of spending…
I could go on and on… And I do… In my book!
