10 Things to Do in The Catlins in 2 Days (New Zealand)
Often overlooked by those wandering around Dunedin or heading around Invercargill, The Catlins sits pretty at the southern tip of South Island, New Zealand just waiting for people to pass through…
JK! Don’t just pass through and miss out on these highlights…
Table of Contents
1. Waipohatu Trail

This quiet trail is a hidden gem in the Catlins. It’s a bit muddy, so don’t wear anything you mind getting dirty. Start by turning left at the fork to reach the first waterfall. Surprise—there’s a second waterfall too! This hike takes a little over an hour, not including time to enjoy the falls.
2. Slope Point

Though the views are fine, the real experience here is the intense wind! The gusts at Slope Point are stronger than anything I’ve felt, even in Iceland. It’s also the southernmost point of South Island, so brace yourself as you enjoy the wild atmosphere.
3. Curio Bay

Curio Bay is famous for its petrified forest, but the highlight for many visitors is spotting wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may see yellow-eyed penguins, dolphins, and seals. The best times for viewing animals are sunrise and sunset, so time your visit accordingly.
4. Koropuku Falls

This hidden waterfall is a pleasant surprise in the Catlins. The hike is a short 20-minute round trip, but it’s worth the stop, even if it’s a bit muddy. Don’t be like me and fall in—unless you want to! The peaceful setting makes it one of my favorite stops.
5. McLean Falls

This popular waterfall is easily accessible and one of the tallest in the region. It’s a short 20-minute hike to reach the falls, where you can enjoy beautiful views and a refreshing stop in the Catlins.
6. Cathedral Caves

These stunning ocean caves are only accessible at low tide, so plan accordingly! It’s a short, 20-minute hike to reach the cave, where you’ll be greeted by massive cathedral-like walls carved by the sea. Get there early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the beauty before others arrive.
7. Lost Gypsy Van

This quirky stop is full of random oddities and creative projects, making it a fun, offbeat thing to do in the Catlins. Expect funky decor, bizarre experiments, and a tiny coffee shop to enjoy. Nearby, Teapot Land is another must-see for lovers of the strange.
8. Matai Falls

This easy-to-reach waterfall has a viewing platform, which detracts a little from the natural beauty, but it’s still a lovely spot. There’s another smaller waterfall at the top, so be sure to check out both. The entire walk should take about 20 minutes round trip.
9. Purakaunui Falls

One of the most popular waterfalls in the Catlins, Purakaunui Falls is an easy stop but tends to be crowded, especially with tour buses. The falls are stunning, particularly after a bit of rain, so time your visit when the weather has been wetter for the best views.
10. Nugget Point

Nugget Point is a must-see in the Catlins, and sunrise is the best time to visit for spectacular lighting. If you’re not an early riser, any time of day is still worth the trip to see the lighthouse and its iconic “nuggets,” the large rocks in the ocean. It’s one of the most photogenic spots in the region.
