As one of the most traveled to destinations in the world, Bangkok surely has a lot to live up to. Whether you’re looking for delicious cuisine in the epicenter of the Thai food Mecca or trying to find some rare and unique souvenirs for loved ones back home, Bangkok has many places you can get both of these in one place.

If you have a few days in Bangkok, you’ll have to visit at least one of the popular markets.

Here is a list of the five Bangkok markets that no trip to the jewel of Southeast Asia would be complete without!

1. Rot Fai Market (Train Market)

On the north side of the city, Rot Fai Market is a truly underrated place to pick up cheap knickknacks and other great things unique to Thailand. This open-air night bazaar sells retro collectibles and other great items harking from days gone by. There are three different sections bustling with vendors selling clothes, leather jackets, and much more.

The goods sold here come from a variety of countries as well as time periods and of course there is plenty of delicious, authentic Thai food to satisfy any craving. It’s open from sundown to midnight, Thursday to Sunday. This market is a bit out of the way, but certainly worth the effort. Try staying at the Nasa Vegas Hotel that’s just northwest of the market.

2. Pratunam Market

In this major downtown market, fashion and fashion accessories at wholesale prices are all the rage. The market spills into nooks and narrow alleys selling anything you could think to wear. The prices are unbelievably cheap and like most markets, vendors expect you to at least put up a little resistance when it comes to haggling.

The market’s location at Ratchaprop road allows the hungry shopper to have their pick of sumptuous street food or wander into one of the nearby malls and have their pick of restaurants in cooler environs. You may want to consider staying at the Galleria Bangkok Hotel that isn’t too far.

3. Pak Khlong Talad

This is one of the most famous markets in Bangkok, but its reputation is very well-deserved. It is the city’s largest flower market (there are a few) and is a sight to behold even in the wee hours of the night as shipments are delivered at all hours.

During the daytime, as the sun rises high in the sky, is when the dynamic and vibrant colours shine. But a trip to Pak Khlong Talad won’t only reward your sense of sight. The robust fragrances will fill your nose with delight and not only is there a fantastic array of flowers, but the freshest fruit and vegetables in the city also make appearances every day.

4. Klong Toey Market

This spot is just south of the Continent Hotel. If you’re eating fresh seafood, fruit, vegetables, or anything else fresh, there is a 50% chance it came from Klong Toey Market. The seafood arrives alive as it is caught just the previous day and so you buy it alive and you leave with it prepared to eat.

The same goes for other meats like chicken. But you can find more than delicious fresh food at this bustling market. It also sells clothes, home appliances, shoes, accessories, household items, and many other goods at wholesale, basement prices. Perhaps the best part about experiencing this market is just to walk around and explore. With crowds of people doing their daily shopping and some just spending a day relaxing at the market, Klong Toey Market is a great place to spend time at.

5. The Bangkok Farmer’s Market

The Bangkok Farmer’s Market is, of course, a market, but it is much bigger than that. It is more of a co-op of local farmers working together to promote organic produce all over Thailand. They focus on healthy eating and healthy living. The organization also gives back to the communities that give them so much through education, charity and community work throughout the country.

On the first and third weekend of every month, the market springs up a designated location to bring the fresh organic food to the people who appreciate it the most. Not only are there farmers, but also artist selling their work and vendors selling anything from beauty products to clothing also turn up. It is a community affair and it is not to be missed.

Where else are you off to? There are SO many things to do around Bangkok, you’ll need at least a few days to get to the highlights.

Which market are you excited to go to in Bangkok?
